Why Oversharing Isn’t for Me

Tuesday, January 07, 2025

One thing that keeps me grounded in my relationships at home and with others is valuing privacy. Here's how I approach it:

  1. Marriage & Relationship Privacy
I don’t frequently share how happy my marriage is on social media. My husband and I don’t seek external validation—we cherish our privacy and the bond we share.

  2. Children’s Privacy
We don’t share our kids’ achievements online unless they’ve given us permission. While we’re proud parents, we also respect their need for privacy, especially now that they understand its importance. Every photo posted is with their consent.

  3. Material Possessions
I don’t flaunt the things I buy or receive as gifts. I also don’t splurge on expensive items—I’m practical (yes, kuripot! 😊). However, when it comes to food, I love to indulge!

Why I Value Privacy:

  1. Not Everyone is Happy for You
Comparison is the thief of joy. Sharing too much invites unnecessary judgment or envy.

  2. Insincere Comments
Many "nice" comments on social media aren’t genuine. I know this because I’ve been guilty of it, too.

  3. The Evil Eye
Oversharing can attract unwanted attention and negative energy.

  4. Jealousy
Flaunting achievements or possessions can stir jealousy, even unintentionally.

  5. Lack of True Internet Privacy
Even with strict privacy settings, nothing online is truly private. As someone who works in software development, I know how data can be accessed.

  6. Protecting Relationships
If someone is in an inappropriate or secretive relationship, social media exposure can lead to unnecessary drama or even ruin lives, families, and careers.

Social media can be both a blessing and a curse. While it can inspire and motivate, it can also trigger negativity and unhealthy comparisons. For me, preserving privacy brings peace and authenticity, and I’m committed to that—even if it makes me seem “boring.”

Let’s not fall into the trap of social media being the devil’s eyes, ears, and mouth. Privacy is powerful.
